After 42 days of complete lockdown, the state government of Telangana gave a few relaxations starting Wednesday. The state, better known for its wine, has seen beer sales soar in recent years, spurred by an increase in craft brewing. Barring the containment zones in Hyderabad, the sale of liquor is resumed in all zones (Green, Orange & Red) of Telangana.
Despite an average price hike of 16%, the state witnessed massive sales on first day of resumption of liquor. After grappling to fill the coffers due to outbreak of COVID, the first day has reportedly generated a whopping 42 Cr revenue from alcohol sales.
While it is a lot of revenue generation to Telangana govt’s exchequer, it also means that several thousands of people must have lined up to buy liquor across the state during this crisis. According to reports, 42 Cr revenue is generated on the first day.
The price hike seems to have shown no impact on day-1 sales, but any kind of bad repercussions would cost more to the state which reported 11 positive cases on Wednesday.
