Over the months, countless female Indian actors have been promoting and filling pockets in the service of advertising alcohol on social media. It is an explicit never-seen-before situation across the nation where a bunch of well-known faces fronting promotions for intoxicating beverages.
And the actors who are involved in promoting these big brands are Kajal Aggarwal, Payal Rajput, Regina Cassandra, Pooja Hegde, Laxmi Raai, Faria Abdullah, Hansika, Ileana D’cruz, Huma Qureshi, Radhika Apte and many more. We have Pan-India stars promoting whiskey. A few days ago, Pooja Hegde was brutally trolled for posting a picture promoting Johnnie Walker whiskey.
And Kajal Aggarwal promoted Teacher’s whisky along with her husband, saying that the latter enjoyed drinking. When Regina promoted the Signature brand, she was trolled brutally as well. Fans of these stars have flooded their posts with judgemental comments and even warned of unfollowing them. A section of fans requested them to stop promoting harmful products.
Well, these liquor endorsements bring in big bucks and it can be tough to explain why a beloved star would promote a potentially unhealthy activity sometimes. We all admire these beautiful ladies, but it is up to us to understand the difference between drinking alcohol and being a dipsomaniac. And note that, celebrities do not take responsibility for our health, especially when they also promote harmful cosmetics and fast food incessantly.
Fans and Netizens have been voicing their displeasure that many well-known actresses are rigorously promoting alcohol. To a certain extent celebrities do have a moral responsibility when it comes to endorsing products, for instance, a famous star should be held liable personally if he/she promotes something outright illegal as they are seen as role models for society.
But attributing criminal liability to them for merely adding brand value to a product is also not right. We are talking about the lump sum money here. Why would any star on the holy earth care for a random civilian over currency? It is a personal choice and we are responsible for being influenced by the stars and media.
