The postponement of #RRR from January 7th is the biggest shocker ever for the whole film industry though it’s not avoidable as the third wave of covid is engulfing the country at a jet speed. However, with next months looking seemingly impossible for the Rajamouli directorial to hit cinemas, Amazon Prime Video is said to have offered a terrific deal.
In fact, Amazon often buys big-ticket entertainers with more ₹ 30+ crores investment, but then they haven’t experimented with the pay-per-watch model on the Indian market. In USA circuits, Amazon often rents a film for a day at a stipulated cost a model that is being implemented by Youtube in India for certain movies.
And Amazon is said to have offered that model to #RRR with a projection that they will easily make ₹ 200 crores revenue through this. However, that revenue is nothing when compared to the theatrical estimates and hence the producer has rejected the idea.
As the film has to collect more than 400 crores from the box office such that the making costs will be recovered to the fullest, surely OTT release is not an option even if it is a single-payout model or pay-per-watch model.
