Shakuntala Devi Trailer: Vidya Shines As Super Woman

Published by

Bollywood and biopics can’t be separated. The Hindi film industry continues its penchant for biopics and this time it is the biopic of India’s Super Woman Shakuntala Devi, a mathematics genius, who went onto enter into World’s Guinness Book of Records in 1982. Shakuntala Devi’s talent in mental calculation earned her the sobriquet of “Human Computer”.

The trailer of Shakuntala Devi shows Vidya getting under the skin of the role. Vidya shines as the maths genius. Vidya breathes life into the role and director Anu Menon seems to have crafted it meticulously. Since Shakuntala Devi’s story is not known much to the younger generations, this would be an interesting story to be narrated on screen.

The makers have delved deep into Shakuntala’s life story and attempted to tell us her personal story. So, there is more to the story of math genius and world’s Human Computer. The story revolves around her, her family life. Shakuntala Devi wrote a number of books, including novels as well as texts about mathematics, puzzles, and astrology. She wrote the book The World of Homosexuals, which is considered the first study of homosexuality in India

Not many are aware that Shakuntala Devi contested in politics and contested as an independent from Mumbai South and Medak in 1980. She stood against then former PM Indira Gandhi in Medak saying that she wanted to “defend the people of Medak from being fooled by Indira Gandhi”. But she lost the election as Indira-led Congress bounced back capturing 351 out of 529 Lok Sabha seats. The film is going to be a tell-all story of Shakuntala Devi. And the trailer is pretty impressive. Vidya seems to be a perfect cast as Shakuntala. Sachin-Jigar duo’s music is complimenting the visuals.

The world premiere of “Shakuntala Devi – The True Story of India’s Math Genius” will be aired on July 31st on Amazon Prime. The film also features Sanya Malhotra, Amit Sadh, Jisshu Sengupta besides Vidya.
