After a gap of more than two and a half years, Suriya is coming up with a theatrical release. His last two films, Aakashame Nee Haddura and Jai Bhim had their respective releases directly on Amazon Prime Video. Both of them ended up as successful ventures.
However, Suriya doesn’t have a theatrical success for a long time. If we exclude the direct OTT releases, the actor has been suffering from a string of flops. He is planning to make a strong comeback in the theatres with his upcoming film ET.
Touted to be a commercial drama laced with an undercurrent social message, ET is all set to hit the screens on March 10, in both Tamil and Telugu languages. Suriya is taking a big risk of clashing with Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam, which is releasing on March 11.
It is important for Suriya to score a hit with ET to regain his shrinking theatrical market, especially in the Telugu states. Moreover, he is doing his next two films with Bala and Vetrimaaran respectively.
Both those movies are experimental flicks. We cannot predict those films’ fate at the box office because they are not regular commercial movies. In order to get good openings for those movies, it is important for Suriya to score a hit with ET.
If ET flops at the box office, his next two films may suffer poor openings and the box office fate also depends entirely on the content. Thus, ET turns out to be a litmus test for this talented star. It should become a hit and survive at the box office by tackling Radhe Shyam well. Let’s see if that happens or not.
