Even as the Covid-19 pandemic is worsening in the US and elsewhere, the unlock is also happening in a parallel way. The movie industry, one of the worst-affected industries, is also slowly reconciling with the present scenario. Several nations are reopening the movie theaters for the revival of the industry’s economy. Europe too witnessed the reopening of cinema chains.
China has agreed to reopen the movie theaters in “low risk” areas starting July 20. Though China had earlier opened the cinemas, it had again ordered shut down after the Corona Virus returned. But considering the prevailing conditions, China has taken the decision to reopen cinemas in low risk areas.
On the other hand, the United States also has movie theaters running. In addition to the drive-ins, cinemas are also slowly picking up. Out of 5000-odd cinemas, 1500 theaters are currently running and 300 drive-ins are adding up to the revenues. While the situation in the US continues to be worsening, one has to wait and watch for the possible steps to be taken by the local government in the coming days.
However, there seems to be no relief for Cinema theaters in India in near sight. Though the business of several other sectors is as usual, movie theaters, gyms have not been opened yet. Several states are ordering for the lockdown of cities where the spread of Corona Virus is rapid. Amidst this, the movie theaters may have to wait for a couple of months. Though OTT is emerging as an alternative platform for movie business with its vast distribution, still several medium and high-budget films are waiting for the theatrical release. On the whole, 2020 is going to be a costly year for movie biz with interests piling up.
