Veteran actor Krishnam Raju, who was fondly called as ‘Rebel Star’, passed away. He breathed his last in the wee hours of Sunday at around 3.25 am. Krishnam Raju was unwell for sometime and was being treated at a private hospital.
Two-time Lok Sabha member from Kakinada and Narsapuram constituencies, Krishnam Raju had served as the Union Minister of State. Born in Mogalthur of West Godavari district on 20 January, 1940 He was 82-year-old. He is survived by wife Shyamala Devi and three daughters.
Krishnam Raju made his acting debut with Chilaka Gorinka in 1966. He acted in several successful films including Katakataala Rudraiah, Mana Voori Pandavulu, Bobbili Brahmanna, Tandra Paparayudu, Antima Theerpu, Palnati Pourusham. He was last seen in Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam.
In 1990s, Krishnam Raju became active in politics. He joined BJP and won as MP for 12th and 13th Lok Sabha. He served as Union Minister of State for External Affairs Ministry in Atal Bihari Vajpayee government from 1999 to 2004. He later joined Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party in 2009 and contested to Lok Sabha from Rajahmundry and lost.
Krishnam Raju acted in more than 190 films in his acting career spanning over 5 decades. He won 5 Filmfare Awards South, 3 State Nandi Awards. Baahubali actor Prabhas is Krishnam Raju’s nephew.
