Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyan Selvan 1 was promoted as a bigger film than Baahubali and a story that every Indian must know as it is based on the real-life and times of the greatest Indian King Raja Raja Chola. After the theatrical rights are sold for nearly ₹180 crores across the globe, the film already collected a share of ₹110 crores from the first weekend itself, with the Tamil version contributing majorly. What’s up now?
While the Tamil version continues to show its authority in Tamilnadu and outside India as well, the Telugu and Hindi version is said to have come crashing now. After making ₹7+ crores share (13+ crores gross) in the first weekend, PS1 has come down crashing heavily on the first Monday with the share touching just ₹60-70 lakhs as per unofficial reports from trade circles. That’s a big sort of crash as Tuesday is the only saving grace for the project, and distributor Dil Raju should recover nearly a total of ₹11 crores share for the film to be a no-loss project.
As a ‘storm’ is coming on Wednesday with Megastar Chiranjeevi’s “Godfather” and Nagarjuna’s “The Ghost” releasing big here in Telugu states, surely PS1 has to face the music in many centres and the film might not be available in some towns on the eve of three Dasara holidays. Looks like the reign of PS1 is almost out in the Telugu states while the situation in Bollywood is no different as there are also the film hasn’t found any big takers.
