After the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hindi film industry is facing a severe crisis. None of its movies is working in theatres as people aren’t showing interest to come to the cinema halls unless there is a spectacle in store for them. Thus, many Bollywood films failed at the box office.
On the flip side, South films like KGF Chapter 2, RRR and Kantara did extremely well in the North. South Indian films dominated the 2022’s ‘top-10 films’ lists of various media houses. This created the debate about whether Bollywood’s chapter is done and if South India becoming the new face of Indian cinema.
One of the most successful Hindi directors, Rohit Shetty, was asked the same question in a recent interview. He said that people are forgetting that Bollywood delivered many classics like Mother India, Sholay, Amar Akbar Anthony, Deewar, Khiladi, Hum Aapke Hai Kaun, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Singham and Golmaal.
He stated that one bad year cannot take away the legacy of Bollywood. He asked people not to underestimate Hindi films just for their recent performances. He also asked everyone not to rave about South Indian movies.
What Rohit Shetty is forgetting is that his successful films like Singham, Sunday and Simmba are remakes of South Indian movies. He himself depended on South Indian content most of the time in his career and is feeling insecure about South films’ pan-India success right now.
People who listened to Rohit’s statements are asking him to stop feeling insecure and start coming up with genuinely good content to score a pan-India success. Rohit’s new film Cirkus is gearing up for a grand release on December 23.
