On one side, the whole cast and crew of “RRR” is quite elated as they say that this is a historic moment for Indian cinema as the film’s Naatu Naatu song made it to the Oscar Shortlists for the “Best Music (Original Song)” category. On the other side, a shocker has taken place, thereby muting the hardcore admirers of RRR for a reason.
When the Film Federation of India picked up the Gujarati film “Chello Show” as India’s official contender for Oscar nominations, there is widespread criticism from the fans of RRR, saying that they should have picked up the Rajamouli directorial as the official entry. After RRR got global acclaim with a stupendous success in Japan and a terrific reception from Hollywood’s star actors, filmmakers and critics, fans of RRR further trolled FFI’s decision to pick up Chello Show. Here comes the twist now.
In the ‘Shortlists’ announced by “The Academy” today, they have picked up “Chello Show” as well among the 15 films that were picked up for voting from the 92 entries (from 92 countries) that were officially submitted for consideration for “Best International Film” category at the 95th Academy Awards. Titled ‘Last Film Show’ in English, this movie competes with the likes of Argentina 1985, All Quiet On The Western Front, Decision To Leave and The Quiet Girl, films that got stupendous attention from around the globe.
While RRR’s song is picked up for the Shortlists, the presence of Chello Show in the “Best International Film” shortlist despite the fact that the makers of that film haven’t even promoted it in Hollywood, is a real shocker for RRR admirers. Well, that’s how the Oscars actually work.
