The Telugu Film Industry lost yet another legend in the form of veteran actor Kaikala Satyanarayana. Kaikala has an association of 60 years with Telugu cinema and in politics, it was a brief moment. Even though Kaikala’s tenure in politics was short, he was a committed person and here is his political side.
Late NTR had encouraged Kaikala Satyanarayana and the latter even campaigned for Telugu Desam in the elections. NTR and Kaikala hailed from Krishna district and so their association strengthened further. This association led Kaikala towards politics and in 1996, he contested for the Machilipatnam Parliamentary seat on behalf of the TDP.
Back then in AP, TDP and Congress parties were very strong in their own strengths. From Congress, Kolusu Peda Reddaiah Yadav competed against Kaikala. The battle was an intense one yet the people of Machilipatnam entrusted their faith in Kaikala.
Kaikala won with a majority of 81,507 votes. In this election, Kaikala put his own money for the election campaign and did not seek any reimbursement from TDP which showed his honest approach in politics.
But unexpectedly the Vajypayee government collapsed and the by-election was inevitable. These events had an impact on Telugu Desam and simultaneously opportunities were knocking Kaikala. He had quit politics to continue his filmy journey.
Kaikala served as an MP for just two years but has done remarkable work. He was instrumental in increasing the occupancy in Narsapuram – Hyderabad Express service train and he did everything in his hand for the people who voted for him.
Rest in peace Kaikala Satyanarayana!
