BO: This Selfie Bites Bollywood Painfully Again

For reasons unknown, Bollywood is not able to capitalise on the ₹1000 crores success amassed by Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan. This Friday, amidst huge expectations, Akshay Kumar’s Selfie was released and the film trade expected that the superstar will revive the fortunes of B-town with this Malayali remake.

Coming to the content, many critics and film lovers felt that “Selfie” missed that soul point that was narrated in Prithviraj’s Driving License. For that reason, the film failed to give any high moments even for the audience who didn’t watch the original.

From the trade point of view, the film is likely to collect nearly ₹2.5+ crores nett on its release day, and that is the worst opener of sorts for Akshay Kumar. Going by the reviews and the word of mouth, it looks like the film is not likely to take any huge leap.

Around the same time, Pathaan which is into its fourth week has collected a nett of ₹1.1+ crores on the very same Friday, thus proving that the SRK starrer is a real big deal.

In a way, even Selfie joined the gang of films like Shehzada that have bitten Bollywood painfully. While remakes are not working for now, we have to see original films like Ranbir Kapoor’s Tu Jhooti Main Makkar work in March 2023. But then there are high hopes for Ajay Devgan’s Khaidi remake “Bholaa”.
