“Selfiee” starring Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi had a disappointing opening weekend, earning just over ₹10 crore nett. The film is a remake of the 2019 Malayalam film “Driving Licence” and marks the latest in a series of underperforming films for Akshay, including “Bachchhan Paandey”, “Samrat Prithviraj”, “Raksha Bandhan”, and “Ram Setu” from the previous year.
Directed by Raj Mehta, “Selfiee” earned ₹2.60 crore on Friday, ₹3.75 crore on Saturday, and only ₹3.85 crore on Sunday. Box Office India reports that the film’s first weekend collections stand at approximately ₹10.20 crore net. This marks Akshay’s lowest opening in a decade, and the actor is also a producer on the project. Nushrratt Bharuccha and Diana Penty also star in the film, marking the first time the lead actors have worked together.
Despite the film’s poor performance, Akshay remains optimistic and has a busy year ahead. He is set to embark on a concert tour called “The Entertainers” with Nora Fatehi, Disha Patani, Mouni Roy, and Sonam Bajwa in the US. He will also be seen in “OMG 2 – Oh My God! 2”, the Hindi remake of “Soorarai Pottru”, “Bade Miyan Chote Miyan”, and the Jaswant Singh Gill biopic later this year.
In a recent interview with Aaj Tak, Akshay acknowledged the changing audience and the need for him to reinvent himself accordingly. He spoke about taking responsibility and shared that he had experienced similar setbacks earlier in his career. Despite the disappointment of “Selfiee”, Akshay remains one of the most popular and successful actors in the Hindi film industry.
