One of the top musicians from India, AR Rahman spoke his mind on the selection of movies that are being sent to the Oscars.
The Indian film industry is on cloud nine with Rajamouli’s RRR’s Naatu Naatu and Guneet Monga’s The Elephant Whisperers bringing Oscars home. AR Raham, a winner of the Grammy Award and Academy Award spoke about his own winning experience and also opened up about the kind of films that go from India as its official entry into the Oscars.
In an interview with L Subramaniam, AR Rahman said, ‘Sometimes, I see that our movies go till the Oscar… they don’t get it. Wrong movies are being sent for the Oscars. And I am just like DON’T. We have to be in another person’s shoes. I have to be in Westerner’s shoes to see what’s happening here. I have to be in my shoes to see what they are doing.’
India’s official entry was a Gujarati film Chhello show (The Last Show). RRR was among the frontrunners for nominations but was not included as an official entry in the Best Foreign Film category.
AR Rahman won an Oscar in 2009 for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for the film Slumdog Millionaire along with composer Gulzar at the 81st Academy Awards.
