Bollywood top producer and director Karan Johar has faced significant criticism and accusations of nepotism in the past, most recently following the death of Sushant Singh and more recently, due to his alleged involvement with Anushka Sharma’s film career. The debate has reignited conversations about nepotism in the industry.
This week, a resurfaced video of Karan Johar admitting that he had campaigned against Anushka Sharma before she did Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, went viral on social media. The Citadel star Priyanka Chopra also opened up about her experience moving to the US because she felt “cornered” in Bollywood. Subsequently, Kangana Ranaut reshared Priyanka’s interview, claiming that Karan Johar has been known to “ban” people from the Hindi film industry and accused the filmmaker of taking out his aggression on those who are most vulnerable. She stated that he should be held accountable so toxic people do not prevent outsiders from achieving their career aspirations. Reacting to this, Karan voiced his stance against the allegations directed at him with a post on Instagram Stories.
Karan wrote: “Let the blame rest upon me, for I shall not bow to those who spread lies; no matter how much you try to discredit or accuse me, I shall not fall vulnerable against [your] blows; our strength is our victory over all odds – if you want to take up arms, I will never succumb among those who perish.”
Anushka Sharma has yet to give her official stance on the current controversy surrounding Karan Johar. It remains to be seen whether or not she will provide a positive statement on the situation, and it is hoped that such an action would help resolve the disagreement among those involved.
