Director Gunasekhar thought of bringing the mythologies closer to millennials with his Shaakuntalam. But the movie is nowhere close to impressing the millennials and instead emerged as a complete waste of effort.
First things first, Shaakuntalam is one story from mythology that has a simple thread of love story and the emotional pain she felt during the rejection. The story of Shakuntala does not have conspiracies, intriguing plots, or political ploys. Attempting a pale and dull romance tale like Shaakuntalam in these times is a blunder in itself.
Another thing that works against Shaakuntalam is the casting. Samantha is a talented actress but does not quite suit the character of Shakuntala. No matter how good an actor is, it ends up being artificial and superficial when they do not fit into the character. Not just Samantha, but the other actors in crucial characters failed to establish an emotion due to their non-Telugu backgrounds. It resulted in a cringefest and gave the feeling of watching a dubbed mythology episode on the first television channel.
Neither the millennials nor the gen z could be entertained with Shaakuntalam. The low range of VFX and only the enthusiasm to make a spectacle out of a weak story resulted in this soap opera.
