Much hyped movie Shaakuntalam which features Samantha Ruth Prabhu as a lead got released last week amidst huge hype. Surprisingly, the film hasn’t impressed the audience and the critics as well, and it is struggling to survive at the box office. For a film that is made with more than ₹50 crores budget, here is what happened at the weekend box office as per the trade.
In recent times, almost all the big-budgeted films, no matter how worst flops they are, have attained a double-digit number as a gross collection in their first week. However, Samantha’s hyped movie failed to touch the double-digit gross after its first weekend if the early reports are to be believed. It is very rare to see big films fail to touch the double-digit gross, and usually, at least they will do a 30% recovery. But in Samantha’s case, it could be understood that the movie is not working and might be a total washout from Monday after creating this new ‘low collection’ record.
On the other hand, director Gunasekhar and producer Dil Raju anticipated that the film will beget some good collections from the box office, while it will also fetch better non-theatrical rights post release. Though the deals are almost confirmed for the rights, they say that the satellite and OTT platforms might not offer huge amounts now after seeing the result.
