Pulling off female-oriented flicks is not an easy task. Not every star heroine can score blockbusters with female-oriented films. Vijayashanti pulled off such incredible feats in the past. In recent times, only Anushka and Nayanthara have the capability of scoring big hits with lady-oriented movies.
Samantha tried to join this list. Though she scored decent hits like U-Turn and Oh Baby, she couldn’t pull off a big-budget film. Her latest flick Shaakuntalam proved to be a disaster. It was made on a reported budget of around Rs. 60 crores but failed to collect a double-digit share in the first weekend.
On top of that, Shaakuntalam was released on a pan-India scale. As a result, it turned out to be a huge loss venture for all distributors involved.
The film’s director-producer Gunasekhar might have thought that Samantha’s craze will bring him money but the plan backfired badly. The same was the case with producer Sivalenka Krishna Prasad who bankrolled Samantha’s last film, Yashoda. Though the film was a financially profitable venture, it couldn’t generate big numbers as per the producer’s expectations.
Thus, industry folks say that Samantha failed to achieve the stardom that Nayan and Anushka gained among the masses. With Shaakuntalam’s result, makers may think twice before producing big-budget lady-oriented films with Samantha from now on.
