Samantha’s Shaakuntalam tanked at the box office without a trace. The movie was ridiculed by critics and audiences alike due to its poor emotions, cartoonish visual effects, and almost everything except for Allu Arha. A senior actress who was a co-star with Samantha in Shaakuntalam is feeling bad about the result and she says it ‘hurts’.
Actress Madhoo (Madhubala earlier) of Roja and Gentleman fame appeared in the role of Menaka, the distressed mother of Shakuntala. Her role was limited to a few scenes with Jushu Sen Gupta in the heavenly background. In a recent interview with DNA, Madhoo said she is hurt because the film failed to perform at the box office even after the makers and producers worked very hard. She even compared the Shaakuntalam result to that of RRR and Baahubali!
Madhoo said, ‘I feel very sad that Shaakuntalam has underperformed because the makers and producers gave it all. From the pre-production to release, unhone kahi bhi us picture ko dheela nahi chhoda. After shooting and dubbing, they spent an entire year on CGI. They never took the process for granted and made sure to make it a visual treat. While shooting, I saw they never gave any stress to artists or technicians. They took care of our comfort as well.’
Madhoo went ahead to compare Shaakuntalam’s result to that of Baahubali and RRR! She said, ‘Shaakuntalam has a strong South Indian flavor, with mythology. Ab Baahubali chali… RRR chal gayi… jab koi picture chal jaati hai, toh you don’t know.. logic nahi hota (Baahubali and RRR worked, one never knows the logic behind why some films work and others don’t). Nobody expected that Baahubali would be such a gigantic hit. Aachi bhi bani ho toh bhi itna bada success kisi ne expect nahi kiya tha (Even if the film is good, no one had expected it to be a big hit). We never anticipated that the film would underperform at the box office. So it just hurts you because this is the film where everyone worked really hard.’
Madhoo might have seen the hard work that the whole team did for the movie Shaakuntalam. But it is time she realizes that the output is all that matters. The efforts will never be noticed if the output does not reflect the hard work and time the team put into it. Shaakuntalam is a colossal failure in every inch and comparing it to RRR and Baahubali is funny.
