Hero Vijay Deverakonda and dashing director Puri Jagannadh’s latest release, ‘LIGER,’ turned out to be a disaster at the box office. The film resulted in substantial losses for distributors and exhibitors, leading to a controversy between director-producer Puri Jagannadh and the exhibitors/distributors.
On Friday, exhibitors and distributors of ‘LIGER’ organized a relay hunger strike at the Film Chamber in Filmnagar, demanding director Puri Jagannadh to address the situation. Speaking at the event, one exhibitor expressed, “Warangal Sreenu apparently acquired the rights for the Nizam region of ‘LIGER’ at a high price, and we obtained the exhibition rights from him by paying substantial advances. However, the film did not perform well, and the main distributor, Warangal Sreenu, is currently absconding. Thus, our only option is to approach director Puri Jagannadh. We beg you Puri garu, please settle the issue. “. Exhibitors also requests Vijay Deverakonda.
Another distributor added that Puri Jagannadh had previously promised to alleviate their situation by providing Rs 9 crore. “We are approximately 20 individuals from various regions in Telangana who are protesting here. We will continue our protest until we receive an assurance from director Puri Jagannadh or the Telugu and Telangana Film Chamber,” the distributor stated.
Released on August 25th, ‘LIGER’ received negative reviews and poor word-of-mouth from both critics and audiences. The film quickly crashed at the box office, leaving the distributors and exhibitors in significant financial distress.
Director Puri Jagannadh and hero Vijay Deverakonda are yet to respond to these developments.
