The movie field is not an exemption from male-dominated professions, and there are men and women who fight for feminism and equality and get trolled for that. Some of them keep their fight on, and some budding and aspirant actors withdraw their fights just to keep their existence.
Vijay’s Master actress Malavika Mohanan was very upset the other day when Actor Vijay’s fans handle on Twitter came up with a quarantine house cartoon with the movie Master crew in it. While all the male crew including Vijay, Vijay Sethupathi, Anirudh, Gopi Prasanna, director Lokesh were playing games, playing music, working on laptops, and enjoying the songs, the only female in it, Malavika Mohanan was seen cooking. She responded to that sexist and gender-roled cartoon, but she couldnot withstand the abuse for doing so.
Upset with the ‘gender role’ representation, Malavika questioned “The task of a woman even in a hypothetical movie house” is to cook? When will gender roles die? Sigh.” And also “And the funny thing is everyone else seems to be chilling/working while the only female in the house is doing any kind of domestic work? So sexist. Haha.
Malavika Mohanan turned the target of trolls right away and she was abused, slut-shamed, trolled, she finally had to delete the tweet giving up her open-anguish. It looks like when the male-centric cartoon was questioned by an actress, it turned into an ego-centric attack from fans. Singer Chinmayi came is support of Malavika, but only to share the abuse.
And today, a generous fan of her fixed the cartoon version by replacing the cooking Malavika Mohanan to a book reading Malavika Mohanan. The actress tweeted it saying that she loved this version when asked to have fun like others in the room, but her question in the last deleted tweet remains unanswered.
