Prabhas-starrer Adipurush has hit a controversy over the birth of Sita. The film’s screenings were stopped in Nepal’s Kathmandu for allegedly portraying Sita as Indian in the movie. Adipurush is based on Hindu epic Ramayana. It’s based on Valmiki Ramayana. The row erupted over Sita’s birthplace.
The demand is to remove the dialogue in the movie that “Janki is the daughter of India.” As per the Ramayana, Sita was born in Janakpur, which is believed to be in present day Nepal, where Rama came and married her.
Condemning that Sita was born in India as shown in the movie, Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah issued an ultimatum to the makers of Adipurush to correct the mistake both in India and Nepal. He said if the mistake isn’t corrected in the next three days, he threatened to stop the screenings of all Indian movies in the Nepal’s capital city Kathmandu.
Cinema halls across Kathmandu have stopped screenings of Adipurush on 16th June which is the release day. The Nepal Film Union has urged all the cinemas in Kathmandu to stop the screenings of Adipurush. It asked the cinemas outside Kathmandu to assess the situation, security and release it only when there is no signs of violence threat.
Mayor Balen Shah in a tweet on Thursday wrote that Adipurush claims “Sita is the daughter of India”. “Until and unless the slogan ‘Janki is a daughter of India’ in the South Indian film Adipurush is corrected not only in Nepal but also in India, no Hindi film will be allowed to run in the Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Three days have been given to correct this. Hail Mother Sita,” he wrote in Nepali.
Nepal’s QFX Cinemas in a statement said, “Nepal Keeping the security of our viewers, QFX is not going to show ‘Adipurush’… We are waiting for the government’s decision. As soon as this issue is resolved, we will issue another notice and apologise for the inconvenience to our viewers.”
Nepal’s Censor Board also reportedly decided to hold back permission to Adipurush for the same reason.
