The recent release of the highly anticipated film Adipurush, based on the Hindu epic Ramayana, has generated significant controversy and objections regarding the portrayal of the character Ravana. From the film’s teaser itself, concerns were raised about the depiction, and now, after its release, these objections have only grown stronger. The critics argue that the portrayal of Ravana and the kingdom of Lanka in Adipurush deviates significantly from the traditional narrative found in Valmiki’s Ramayana. This is now generating a lot of trolls and memes on social media.
In Valmiki’s epic, Ravana is portrayed as a complex character, a learned scholar, and a devoted follower of Lord Shiva. However, in Adipurush, Ravana is presented as a menacing evil king, lacking the depth and complexity attributed to him in the ancient text.
Then comes the visual representation of Ravana in the film, which has also sparked criticism. Saif Ali Khan, who plays the role of Ravana, sports a black dot on his forehead, which is considered a deviation from the traditional depiction of Ravana as a devotee of Lord Shiva.
Additionally, the character is shown riding on a dragon-like creature reminiscent of bats, sporting a modern haircut with scars on his face, and his ten heads are depicted as aligned like grapes. These exaggerated and unconventional visuals have raised concerns among viewers about the creative liberties taken in portraying such an iconic character. Ravan is considered ‘Ravana Brahma,’ and despite his harmful deeds, people respect him for his other aspects of life. But this portrayal does not make any sense at all.
Another point of contention lies in the portrayal of Lanka, the kingdom ruled by Ravana. Instead of depicting Lanka as a grand and prosperous kingdom, Adipurush presents it as a haunted palace akin to a horror film. This departure from the traditional depiction of Lanka as a magnificent city filled with architectural wonders and cultural richness has further fueled the controversy surrounding the film.
Critics also argue that while Ravana is undoubtedly portrayed as a demon in the Ramayana, his complex nature and human qualities are conspicuously absent in Adipurush. The film fails to highlight Ravana’s intellectual prowess, expertise in various arts, and multifaceted personality. By reducing Ravana to a stereotypical and one-dimensional evil king, the film disregards the nuanced character development in the original epic.
The controversial portrayal of Ravana in Adipurush has ignited a fierce debate among audiences and fans of the Ramayana. Deviating from the traditional narrative, unconventional visual choices and the absence of Ravana’s human qualities have disappointed many.
So far, the makers did not give any logical or valid justification for the ongoing debate. On the other hand, some Hindu organizations have already filed PIL in court, claiming that the film is building an illogical narrative of Ramayana, away from the original.
