Anand Deverakonda and Vaishnavi’s Baby trailer was released last night. The trailer shows a dusky middle-class girl falling in love with a classmate boy. Her look and life turn bright when she goes to college and then she gets close to a rich guy there.
While the trailer hinted at an emotional heart-breaking love story, the looks of the girl changing from dark complexity to a beautiful fair-skinned girl attracted more than the concept or director’s intention did. A social media user commented, ‘Even Fair and lovely changed its name to glow and Lovely after the outrage but we still see movies like #BabyTheMovie doing brown face white face in 2023. This is what happens when you make a YouTube short into a feature film.’
The trailer cut also has left many on social media focusing on the same point and the dialogue ‘Vantalakka – doctor Babu’ added strength to it. Anand Deverakonda appears to have decided to clear the perception and he replied to the tweet saying, ‘Hot take, but mostly an unnecessary / woke take. Maybe you can watch the movie and then comment before jumping the gun.’
It looks like Anand is confident about what Baby has in it and the story may not be just based on the ‘fair’ angle, but it is overshadowing the actual emotion to some extent.
