Megastar Chiranjeevi’s Bholaa Shankar is a remake of the Tamil blockbuster Vedalam. Meher Ramesh is the film’s director. The star-studded cast, including Tamannaah Bhatia, Keerthy Suresh, and Sushanth Akkineni, adds to the excitement. Ever since the film’s announcement has come out, the film has garnered attention in the ongoing debate on original versus remake films. With the release of the trailer, the debate gets heated up.
However, the question remains whether this remake will live up to the success of Vedalam or fall into the category of failed remakes.
Vedalam, released in 2015, is still remembered by movie buffs as a huge blockbuster. It showcased Ajith Kumar’s commanding screen presence, heroic actions, and unique style. Whether Chiranjeevi can deliver the same impact and justice to the character is the primary concern.
While Chiranjeevi is a massive star in his own right, known for his dance and action sequences that delight Telugu fans, matching Ajith’s larger-than-life presence isn’t a big challenge, with a proper characterization designed for him.
But, based on the glimpses we’ve seen of Bholaa Shankar, the direction seems somewhat uncertain. There is a growing trend of using the Telangana accent in recent Tollywood films, including Bholaa Shankar.
In the film, Chiranjeevi is seen speaking in the Telangana Telugu accent and Hyderabadi Hindi. However, this accent doesn’t quite suit him, as he is known for his fluent Telugu and dialogue delivery. Perhaps sticking to his natural style would have been a better choice.
Based on the trailer, there is a debate going on, whether a star like Chiranjeevi should use imitation references to other heroes in his films. In the trailer, there are scenes where Chiranjeevi’s character imitates Ram Charan’s act from “Rangasthalam” and Pawan Kalyan’s mannerisms, which has received mixed reactions from fans. Chiru even imitated Dr. Rajasekhar.
One section of Megastar fans believes that Chiranjeevi, being an iconic star, should set an example and be the reference for the current generation of stars and audiences. They feel that he should refrain from imitating others.
Critics also point out director Meher Ramesh for including such scenes in the trailer and suggest that filmmakers need to adapt their vision of Chiranjeevi to meet current standards rather than relying on outdated comedy styles.
The debate reflects the expectations and concerns of fans who want to see their favorite star shine in roles that do justice to his legacy and appeal to the contemporary audience. Balancing nostalgia with modern storytelling can be a challenge, and opinions on how to approach Chiranjeevi’s roles will continue to vary among fans and film enthusiasts.
One major advantage of Bholaa Shankar that could rival Vedalam is its music. The background score and the first single, “Jam Jam Jajjanaka,” have received positive feedback. Additionally, Chiranjeevi’s dance moves, even at the age of 67, continue to impress audiences.
Chiranjeevi also shared a video from Bholaa Shankar where he imitated his brother Pawan Kalyan’s style and acting nuances. While this performance has delighted mega fans, it remains to be seen how it is received by the wider audience on the big screen.
As the release date approaches, fans and movie buffs alike are eager to witness Bholaa Shankar’s final outcome and determine if it successfully captures the essence of Vedalam while showcasing Chiranjeevi’s unique charisma on screen.
Bholaa Shankar is hitting the screens on 11th August, 2023.
