In the past, Tollywood served as a source of remake material for Bollywood, where successful films were adapted with Bollywood stars. This trend began with the remake of Mahesh Babu and Puri Jagannadh’s “Pokiri” as “Wanted” starring Salman Khan in Hindi. This move revitalized Salman’s stardom, transforming him into a megastar.
This success led to the remakes of other Telugu hits like “Ready” and “Vikramarkudu,” which also became blockbusters in Bollywood.
However, with the emergence of the “Baahubali” series, Telugu films gained a foothold in the Hindi market, resulting in big event films released simultaneously in Hindi and other regional languages.
Subsequently, Bollywood turned its attention to the Tamil industry for story inspiration. Several Tamil films are now being remade in Bollywood. Let’s take a look at some of them:
“Soorarai Pottru” Remake: Based on the real-life story of Gopinath, the founder of Air Deccan, “Soorarai Pottru,” starring Suriya and directed by Sudha Kongara, gained critical acclaim and National Awards. Akshay Kumar is set to remake the film in Hindi, produced by Suriya and directed by Sudha Kongara.
“Kaththi” Remake: Akshay Kumar is also interested in remaking Vijay and Murugadoss’s “Kaththi.” Sanjay Leela Bhansali holds the remake rights and plans to collaborate with Akshay for this project.
“Anniyan” Remake: Director Shankar’s blockbuster “Anniyan,” originally starring Vikram, is being remade with Ranveer Singh. However, this project has faced legal challenges from its original Tamil producer.
“Vedhalam” Remake: Ajith’s hit gangster drama with sister sentiment, “Vedhalam,” directed by Siva, is being remade in Bollywood as “Vedha” with John Abraham. The film is directed by Nikhil Advani, with Tamannaah and Sharvari in key roles.
“Comali” Remake: Jayam Ravi’s “Comali,” directed by Pradeep, is also set for a Bollywood adaptation with Arjun Kapoor in the lead, produced by Boney Kapoor.
“Theri” and “Maanaadu” Remakes: Varun Dhawan is taking on the roles played by Vijay in the cop action drama “Theri” and Simbu in the time-travel concept film “Maanaadu.”
“Love Today” Remake: A remake of the hit film “Love Today” is in the works, starring Aamir Khan’s son Zainaid Khan and the late Sridevi’s younger daughter Khushi Kapoor.
It remains to be seen how these remakes will fare and whether they can replicate the success of their original counterparts.
