Despite Leo pocketing almost ₹148+ crores gross on Day 1 from the global box office, the contribution of some majority multiplexes in the Bollywood arena is ‘zero’ to this. And that is why people are calling it a self-goal of these Bollywood multiplex chains. In case you don’t know, here is what happened.
As the OTT streaming date of Leo is just 4 weeks away from the release date of the movie, a few Hindi multiplex chains have issued an ultimatum to the movie’s producers to hold the streaming release or else they will not screen the movie. Owing to this, the film’s producers have decided to go ahead with the OTT release but cancel the Hindi and Tamil version release in that particular multiplex chain. With multiplex owners dictating terms to producers when should they actually release a film on OTT, surely the call taken by Leo makers is getting applause. However, Bollywood theatres hoped that Ganapath would become a big blockbuster, so they ignored Leo, but the situation reversed.
Trade pundits are also saying that a 4-week window is actually enough for any big movie to make it big at the box office. And if multiplex chains continue to dictate terms like this to producers, surely South Producers won’t bulge as they know the power of their content. With this self-goal, Bollywood will be in a thinking mode for sure.
