Comedy actor Sampoornesh Babu’s films usually get decent openings because they garner good attention before release. Unfortunately, his latest offering Martin Luther King secured dismal openings after its release last Friday. Poor selection of title and lack of adequate publicity appeared to be the main reasons.
A remake of Tamil film Mandela, Martin Luther King is a bold and funny satirical political drama directed by Puja Aparna Kolluru, a self-proclaimed IAS aspirant turned filmmaker. Care of Kancharapalem director Venkatesh Maha made changes to the script according to the sensibilities of our audiences. Yet, the film failed to recover even theatre expenses.
As the film is destined to end up as a huge flop at the box office, its director started making desperate attempts to seek the attention of celebrities and moviegoers. She came up with a series of requests through her X account by tagging politicians, business magnets and film stars, asking them to encourage her film.
Puja initially claimed that she made a movie that deserves applause from all quarters. But, she didn’t acknowledge the fact that it was a remake film. When netizens started trolling her for not giving credit to the original director, she immediately retorted by asking what is wrong in doing remakes as there are so many adaptations and redos in the current era. She also mentioned that the Tamil director has her respect for making such a film.
Despite her earnest appeal to the film fraternity and political bigwigs through her tweets, which went viral on social media, Martin Luther King hardly got any attention. Needless to say, all her attempts went in vain.
