Nearly 5-6 biggies have confirmed their release dates at the Tollywood Sankranthi box office and almost everyone is staying true to the release date. While the release date is fine, now we are hearing that the leading OTT platforms that acquired the streaming rights of these films have rolled out a new clause which is now becoming a cause of concern.
Apparently, if the films that come during Sankranti time (Jan 12th -15th) turn out to be a hit, then they will be ready for streaming within 28-30 days. In case the films turn out to be a flop, now the OTT partners are asking the producers to allow them to stream from January 26th (nearly 2 weeks gap) itself. Earlier, the producers who have fought with the streaming apps for an 8-week window between the release date and streaming date, are now said to have signed this agreement, where the film’s box office success will determine its digital release date.
This is surely a shocker for other releases in the fray because these days it is being heard that OTT platforms are actually cutting down 30-40% of the payment if the film turns out to be a flop. Only if the producers sign a 2-week window agreement as well, it might help them now, but then, this short window is going to destroy the theatrical business for sure.
