Well-known Tamil actor and DMDK (Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam) founder Vijayakanth has passed away at the age of 71. He breathed his last today in the wee hours. He succumbed to a prolonged illness while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chennai.
The hospital in a statement said, “Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff he passed away in the morning on 28th December 2023.”
Unfortunately, he tested Covid-19 positive and suffered breathing issues, as per reports. For over a month, he had been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), relying on artificial respiration through a ventilator. Despite the efforts of medical experts, Vijayakanth could not be saved.
Popularly known as ‘Captain’ by his fans and admirers, Vijayakanth was renowned for his fiery speeches. In the past, he served as the leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Telangana Legislative Assembly.
Vijayakanth’s political party, the DMDK, first contested elections in 2006 and initially won only one seat. However, in the subsequent election, the party experienced a significant turnaround, securing 29 seats in alliance with the AIADMK. Due to declining health, Vijayakanth had distanced himself from active politics, and the DMDK has been managed by his wife and son. The news of his untimely demise has left his fans in shock.
