Very rarely biopics are made in the Telugu film industry with the likes of Mahanati (Savitri biopic) and Kathanayakudu (NTR biopic) being the only talked about ones. Other ones like Mallesham (Chintakindi Mallesh, weaver, biopic) have fetched critical acclaim, but that didn’t push other movie makers to come up with more biopics. Here’s what Bollywood doing with South’s inspiration stories, however.
Bollywood is known for churning out many biopics and they have cashed hugely from the south-stories. Especially they have made a big commercial film out of former actress Silk Smitha’s career in the name of ‘The Dirty Picture’. And recently they have come up with Ajay Devgan’s ‘Maidaan’, which is the biopic of Hyderabadi football player and national coach SA Rahim. Stunningly, they are now coming up with the biopic of a Telugu businessman, the first ever blind person to go to Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study Management Science, and later founded Bollant Industries. The film is titled “Srikanth” and features Rajkumar Rao in the lead.
When Bollywood can capture such interesting stories from the south onto the silver screen as biopics, many are wondering what are Telugu filmmakers doing. But with most of our filmmakers focusing on commercial cinema, and biopics considered to be the less-profitable art cinema, surely it will take some time for youngsters to come up with such movies.
