Tollywood: Who Would Save This Dry Summer?

Well, we have a good start to the 2024 Summer with Siddhu Jonnalagadda’s “Tillu Square” which has clocked ₹100+ crores gross in no time. But then, it looks like the whole of April and May are likely to go dry if no other movie actually clicks at the box office. With many schools and colleges already declaring holidays, let’s have a look at the Summer lineups.

At the beginning of April, all hopes were pinned on Vijay Devarakonda’s Family Star to become that Summer opener, but the film hasn’t impressed the audience. Then came Kona Venkat’s Geethanjali Malli Vachindi, but that didn’t click, and this Monday, it looks like the film will fail to get minimum occupancy in many theatres. Also dubbed movies like Manjummel Boys, Love Guru and DeAr failed to resonate with the entertainment needs of the Telugu audience. There are small films like Sasivadane, Prathinidhi 2 and others, targeting the last two weeks of April, and we have to see how many of them will click.

Then comes May 2024, which doesn’t have a big film at all as Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 AD is likely to get postponed. With election fever gripping the Telugu states for the first two weeks until the Polling Day on May 13th, surely no film will get any mileage. And then, there are films like Vishwaksen’s Gangs Of Godavari set for May 17th release, when the Summer holidays are nearing an end. Going by this planning, there are lots of chances for Telugu summer to go dry in theatres, if at all some films miraculously pull-off a box office wonder. Let’s see what happens.
