In Hollywood, we often see certain directors coming up with only ‘small budgeted’ movies that will have limited cast, and crew and will have out-of-the-box themes. And very rarely do those indie filmmakers actually promote themselves to directing big-ticket films made with exorbitant budgets. But here in India, that’s not the situation.
The likes of Anurag Kashyap and Sujoy Ghosh who have carved out pretty low-budget movies at the start of their careers have slowly turned towards making movies with extraordinary budgets. And in Telugu, we have the likes of Sekhar Kammula and Maruthi who started off with pretty low-budget films but then moved to super-budgeted projects. Recently the director of Cinema Bandi, Praveen Kandregula, impressed everyone with his low-budget filmmaking and even he too ditched that tag with his second film itself.
Going by the title revelation video of “Paradha”, which features Anupama Parameshwaran in the lead, it looks like Praveen opted for crores of budget now for that amazing colour palette and production design. That way, most of the Telugu and Indian filmmakers who start with a notable and critically acclaimed low-budget debut film, will never make one later.
