Vishwak Sen’s Friday release Gangs of Godavari, a rural gangster drama filled with intense action, opened on a positive note despite disappointing reviews and moderate word of mouth.
The film, a Krishna Chaitanya directional, took a solid opening with close to 8.2 Crores Gross on the first day. This is a phenomenal start for a low budget film and also considering the fact that it performed better than other releases, Gam Gam Ganesha and Bhaje Vaayu Vegam.
The film notched up solid numbers in Nizam and Ceeded with 1.10 Crores and 76 Lakhs shares respectively. In remaining territories, the first day numbers are decent.
Gangs of Godavari generated decent buzz because of the impressive content in teasers and trailer and also due to the hit songs. The strong promotional campaign also added to the hype.
However, it fell short of the expectations and garnered low ratings due to the lackluster narration. Despite all this, the film recouped 40 percent of its investment, thanks to the good occupancies in the evening shows.
As both Gam Gam Ganesha and Bhaje Vaayu Vegam secured mixed ratings, Gangs of Godavari will stand a big chance to overcome the negative reviews and perform well in the first weekend. If the film manages to hold decent occupancies, there are good chances for it to emerge as a box office winner.
