As S.S. Rajamouli is gearing up for SSMB 29, his first truly international film, the filmmaker has been bestowed with an honour that befits his rapidly rising stature on the global stage. The maverick filmmaker has been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) or in short, the Oscars Academy.
Other Indian film personalities who got invited this year include actress Shabana Azmi, cinematographer Ravi Varman, producer Ritesh Sidhwani and documentary filmmaker Nisha Pahuja. Costume designer and SS Rajamouli’s better half Rama Rajamouli has also been invited to join the Academy this year.
Members of the AMPAS enjoy a range of privileges. They vote the Oscar winners every year, influencing industry standards. They get to enjoy exclusive screenings, premieres, and networking opportunities. Members also get the opportunity to access workshops, seminars, and the Academy’s library. They serve on committees, participate in initiatives, and receive Academy publications. They also mentor emerging talent, contributing to cinema’s future. Filmmakers like Satyajit Ray and Mira Nair to Karan Johar, Guneet Monga and Zoya Akhtar have previously been invited to join the Academy. Post the release of RRR, Ram Charan, Jr NTR, MM Keeravani and Chandrabose have been invited as well. Now, things turn a full circle with our very own Jakkana garu joining the Academy.
