In a year marked by box office uncertainty and lagging interest in traditional forms of entertainment, two films have emerged as unexpected box office champions – Munjya in Bollywood and Telugu film Kalki 2898 AD across multiple tinsel towns in local languages, thus giving a major relief.
Amidst the dominance of cricket, politics, and other distractions, these two films, released on June 7th and June 27th respectively, have managed to captivate audiences and revive the fortunes of the film business. For the past few years, it has become increasingly challenging to draw people to cinemas and generate substantial box office returns. However, Munjya with ₹100 crores gross and Kalki 2898 AD with ₹550+ crores gross have defied the odds, casting a magical spell on moviegoers and outshining all other forms of entertainment.
Munjya, a small-budget Bollywood film, has emerged as a surprise hit, proving that quality storytelling and compelling performances can still resonate with the audience even if the actors are not so popular. The film’s success has not only boosted the morale of the industry but has also demonstrated that there is a strong requirement for content-driven cinema.
On the other hand, Kalki 2898 AD, a grand sci-fi spectacle featuring an ensemble cast of Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan, has captivated audiences across the country. The film’s visual grandeur, coupled with its compelling narrative, has struck a chord with moviegoers, who have flocked to theaters en masse.
The success of these two films has not only provided much-needed relief to the box office but has also reignited the hope that the theatrical experience can still thrive in the face of OTT domination which led to theatre-closures in Telangana for a couple of weeks.
