Senior starlet Samantha Ruth Prabhu recently shared an Instagram story recommending an “alternative approach” to treating viral infections – using a nebulizer with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and distilled water. However, this advice has been met with strong criticism from medical experts who warn of the potential dangers of this practice.
According to Dr. Rituja Ugalmugle, an internal medicine specialist at Wockhardt Hospitals in Mumbai, hydrogen peroxide nebulization comes with significant risks. “Hydrogen peroxide is generally not recommended for nebulization due to its potential to cause oxidative stress, mucosal irritation, and other serious respiratory issues,” she explained. The doctor further cautioned that inhaling hydrogen peroxide can lead to acute lung injury, chemical burns, and even the risk of infection if non-sterile solutions are used.
Another doctor, Dr Cyriac Abby Philips, who goes by “The Liver Doc”, went a step further and harshly criticized Samantha, calling her “health and science illiterate” for promoting this dangerous practice. He stated that in a “rational and scientifically progressive society,” the actress should be “charged with endangering public health and fined or put behind bars” for the potential harm it could cause. He has however modified his criticism later and removed his call to arrest her.
In response to the backlash, Samantha shared links to YouTube videos featuring doctors who have recommended hydrogen peroxide nebulization. However, the medical consensus appears to be firmly against this approach. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America has explicitly warned people not to nebulize and breathe in hydrogen peroxide, stating that “this is dangerous” during the COVID-19 times.
Many medical experts say that Samantha’s recommendation, despite her good intentions, could put her millions of followers at risk. However, Samantha is not in the mood to listen.
