In a recent Instagram story, acclaimed director Nag Ashwin appeared to take a subtle jab at other filmmakers. Ashwin’s tweet highlighted the box office success of his own film “Kalki,” which he claims earned over ₹1000 crores without any “gore or bloodshed,” seemingly drawing a contrast to the recent success like Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal has a lot of bloodshed all over.
Nag Ashwin’s tweet quickly gained traction on X, with many users weighing in on the apparent dig might have been directed at Sandeep Vanga. Some users praised Ashwin for his subtle critique, while others defended Vanga’s filmmaking approach, arguing that it is a reflection of the harsh realities of the world.
Some users however criticised Nag Ashwin. “Kalki’s budget is 4x times of Animal and has casting like Amitabh, Kamal Hassan, Deepika Padukone, Dulquer Salman etc and comparing this film with Vanga’s blockbuster with just music, screenplay and Ranbir Kapoor is not at all needed,” a netizen wrote on social media. Well, many are agreeing with this factor.
While Nag Ashwin’s tweet suggests that a film can be commercially successful without relying on graphic violence, some argue that the audience’s appetite for such content is a key factor in determining the box office performance of movies like Animal.
