Lyca Productions… One of the prominent production houses in the Tamil film industry. Owned by Subaskaran, Lyca is known for bankrolling big-budget Tamil films. In its decade-long career, Lyca produced many films. However, the banner’s success rate is very low.
Meanwhile, Lyca has a deep connection with director Shankar. The maverick director has delivered heartbreaking disasters for this production house in the form of Superstar Rajinikanth’s 2.0 and Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2. 2.0, which was released in 2018, was the most expensive Indian film back then.
It was reportedly made with a budget of Rs. 550 crores. The film didn’t perform as well as expected at the box office. It was heard that Lyca incurred losses of more than 100 crores with that movie. That was the first major setback for Lyca.
Later, it went on to produce high-budget films like Darbaar, Chandramukhi 2, Ponniyin Selvan 1 and 2, Lal Saalam and Mafia, but all of them ended up as failures at the box office. Even after the experience of 2.0, Lyca teamed up with Shankar once again for the movie Indian 2. Despite experiencing such a big failure with 2.0, Lyca came forward to bankroll Indian 2 with a huge budget.
However, differences arose when Shankar exceeded the proposed budget, resulting in the halt of the shoot. After a long break, the film resumed once again when Red Giant Pictures joined the team. Finally, Indian 2 crossed all hurdles and hit the screens on July 12. However, it received negative talk and ended up as a disaster at the box office. The film barely recovered 10% of its budget.
Moreover, there are also Indian 3 coming up next year. With Indian 2’s result, there are no hopes for the third part. Thus, Lyca’s investment in the Indian franchise will not have full returns for sure.
On the whole, Shankar turned out to be a nightmare for the Subaskaran and his production house by delivering two big disasters.
