Actor Vijay Sethupathi’s daughter got a rape threat on Twitter after the actor announced his exit from ‘800’, a movie planned as a biopic on Sri Lanka cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan. Yesterday, Vijay Sethupathi decided to leave the project after Muttiah himself asked the actor to do so.
The Cyber Cell of Chennai police registered a complaint and Police Commissioner Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal tweeted ‘There has been a lot of concern on social media regarding comments made against a celebrity. On receipt of a complaint to this effect a case has been registered.’, which has no reference to Vijay Sethupathi or the details about the threat.
A tweet from a handle @ItsRithikRajh reportedly called Vijay a betrayer of Tamils and said ‘Only this (sexual assault) would make him learn about the troubles faced by Lankan Tamils’. While this is one tweet, the Twitterati is bringing up many such tweets from the same handle where he abused many actors and cricketers.
Vijay Sethupathi faced the heat when he announced to act in Muttiah’s biopic. Many Tamilians and politicians from the state started calling Muttiah as a traitor and accused him of supporting the killings of Lankan Tamils. They all opposed Vijay from acting in Muttiah Muralitharan’s biopic.
Muralitharan denied all the allegations and said he never supported the killings. Muralitharan as he knows the pain of war and he grew up amid war for over 30 years. Muttiah Muralitharan says his father was hacked when he was seven.
