If we look at the current trend in Bollywood, the commercial films like Baby Jan are crashing at the box office, while on the other hand, cult filmmakers like Rajkumar Hirani are delivering average products like Dunki. Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan and Pathaan may have saved the day, but without these hits, the situation could have been even worse.
The real shock came when Pushpa 2: The Rule— a dubbed film claimed the throne of the top film. This shows how much the impact of Tollywood has been felt.
However, Bollywood makers seem to be misinterpreting this. Seeing a surge in the horror genre, they’ve embraced it with open arms. Last year, Stree 2 and Munjya became unexpected hits, and despite negative feedback, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 still raked in over 400 crores.
This has led to the Maddock Films banner announcing not one or two, but 8 horror films for the next four years. Some of these have even locked in their release dates, meaning the next few years will be filled with ghosts, spirits, and paranormal stories.
The first in this horror series is Thama, starring Rashmika Mandanna in the lead role. The film is scheduled for Diwali release. By the end of December, the film Shakti Shalini will also be ready. In 2026, Bhediya 2, starring Varun Dhawan, will follow, with Akshay Kumar potentially in the lead. In 2027, Stree 3 and Maha Munjya will be released, with casting still underway. By 2028, Pehla Maha Yudda will make its debut, followed by Dusra Maha Yudda in just two months. In these final films, all the characters from the Maddoc Cinematic Horror Universe will come together.
Who knows how many more horror movies they’ll keep bringing out? Only the spirits, or perhaps God, knows!
