Popular film director Shankar has been facing charges of plagiarism and copyright violations with his 2010 movie Enthiran (Robo). The Enforcement Directorate (ED) attached Shankar’s assets worth more than ₹10 crore in the case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
This is the first time ever in India to attach assets under the PMLA on grounds of plagiarism or copyright violation while making a movie. The ED attached 3 immovable properties registered in the name of S. Shankar with a total value of ₹10.11 crore on 17th February.
Aarur Taminadan, author of a story titled Jiguba filed a complaint against Shankar allegeing the Tamil movie Enthiran’s storyline was copied from Juguba. Enhiran was released in 2010 featuring Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai in the main lead. The movie grossed ₹290 crore worldwide.
ED reportedly found that Shankar received a remuneration of ₹11.5 crore for Enthiran, including story development, screenplay, dialogues, and direction.
Shankar recently directed Game Changer with Ram Charan and Indian 2 with Kamal Haasan. Both the movies failed to enthrall the audiences.
