Copy or Coincidence: Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies

Published by

Laapataa Ladies is one of the superhit films released last year. It was also India’s Official Entry for the Oscars. Directed by Kiran Rao, the film received a positive response from everyone. However, now, the film has attracted controversy, as there are allegations that Kiran Rao copied the film.

A clip from the 2019 Arabic short film Burqa City surfaced online, resembling the theme and concept of Laapataa Ladies. The video has sparked a heated debate, with many questioning the originality of Laapataa Ladies.

Burqa City is a satirical short film set in the Middle East. It follows a newlywed man as he frantically searches for his wife after she is mistakenly swapped with another woman wearing a similar burqa. The film critiques patriarchal norms that often render women’s identities invisible.

Kiran Rao is accused of copying the same theme by replacing burqas with ghoonghats and carrying the film’s essence. The controversy has raised questions about creative integrity, with debates continuing about whether the similarities are coincidental or intentional copying.
