Even before the people have come out of the Corona crisis, the news reports about the second wave’s spread is currently creating unrest. Coronavirus pandemic disrupted the functioning of multiple industries, including the film industry.
The government granted permission to reopen theatres with 50 percent occupancy, but the theatre owners and the distributors are not on the same page. The theatre owners want the distributors to pay full rent, irrespective of the occupancy in the cinema halls.
The distributors would end up receiving more losses in such a case. In such a scenario, the new arrivals of Sankranthi would get postponed to Summer next year.
Vakeel Saab, Love Story, Rang De, Krack, and a few more films are lined up for a grand release during Sankranthi. A few of them are big budgeted flicks, and some are medium budgeted flicks. But, all the movies carry positive buzz. The government did not permit a hike in the ticket price, and it also does not work for all movies.
If new films release in theatres for Sankranthi with limited occupancy, it is anyways loss for both distributors and theatre owners. The big question arises if distributors would still be interested in releasing new movies in such a critical situation.
For the current Sankranthi, three biggies were released at the box-office. Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, Sarileru Neekevvaru, and Darbar are released in theatres. All three films did a massive business at the theatres. Missing out on Sankranthi season is hard, but if the situation remains the same, it is inevitable to shift the new releases to a later point in time.
