Two Ds And Three Fs To Break The Telugu-Sequel Flop Trend

Published by

Like Bollywood and Kollywood have franchise films like Golmaal, Kanchana, Aranmanai, and Housefull, the Telugu cinema industry somehow did not succeed in building up one such kind. There are a good number of sequel films in Telugu in the last two decades, but almost none of them managed to hit the right chord, not even close to the first part.

There are two new sequels coming up soon in Telugu. Both these films are anticipated to break the sequel jinx in Telugu and lay a road for more sequels to enthrall us.

One is ‘F3’, the follow-up movie of big blockbuster ‘F2’ of Venkatesh and Varun Tej directed by Anil Ravipudi. F2 turned out to become the biggest blockbuster with fun and frustration. Venkatesh takes us for a hilarious ride throughout the movie, while Varun Tej partners him to take it to next level. The glamour of Tamanna and Mehreen has become an added asset. Anil Ravipudi is confident in bringing on a sequel for F2, and he announced it as F3, this time with ‘more fun’ and also a new actor.

The other one is Manchu Vishnu’s D&D Double Dose, the sequel of one of his biggest blockbusters ‘Dhee’. Sreenu Vaitla is gearing up to recreate the magic of Dhee after 13 long years with D&D. Dhee was a pathbreaker movie that introduced the confusion comedy pulling the audience away from the routine and slapstick comedy. Many of Sreenu Vaitla’s movies after Dhee emerged as blockbusters. With the actor and the director of Dhee joining hands for the sequel, we hope they bring on the best entertainer.

While we discuss the two highly expected sequel movies coming up, let us also throw a look at some of the movies that tried a ‘part-2’, but ended up as wrecks.

Pawan Kalyan’s Gabbar Singh was a comeback for the actor after a long list of disasters. Harish Shankar’s sharp dialogues took the audience by surprise while Pawan Kalyan’s fans have gone into trance with those. After acting in three other films among which there is an industry hit like Attariniki Daredi, Pawan Kalyan decided to make a sequel for Gabbar Singh, as Sardaar Gabbar Singh. It is heard that director Bobby directed the movie mostly under the direction of Pawan Kalyan. The movie ended up as a dud or more like a scar on the first part as well.

Manmadhudu was one of the best movies Nagarjuna acted in. Extremely handsome Nagarjuna, gorgeous Sonali Bendre, Trivikram’s pen power from first to last, and DSP’s songs are the main factors that made the beautiful film get its cult status. Years after that, director-actor Rahul Ravindran convinced Nagarjuna for a sequel of Manmadhudu. The movie is so pathetic that many openly criticized Rahul for damaging the original by using its title. The sequel has become 2 plus hours of torture with endless awry.

Chandramukhi was a sensation back then. Rajinikanth and Jyothika made sure that the essence is kept well and also the audience liked the movie a lot for the thrill. The director P Vasu later decided to make a sequel for the edge-of-the-seat thriller, as Nagavalli. Venkatesh joined the team and so did Anushka. The story by P Vasu is a failure in the beginning, while his direction killed the movie completely. It can be called one of the biggest failures of Venkatesh.

Kick remains one of the best entertainers to date. Be it Raviteja’s performance or Brahmanandam’s comedy, the movie turned out to become a huge hit. Each and every song was a chartbuster and Ileana went on to become a favorite for many. Director Surender Reddy’s thought of making a sequel for Kick sounded good until he made it with the concept of ‘comfort’ and much other unwanted stuff. Kick 2 was renounced by the audience.

Arya was a game turner for Allu Arjun. It was so fresh that Bunny became a star and so did Sukumar for his intelligence. Bunny, Sukumar, and Devi Sri became best friends after Arya, and years after that, they joined hands again for the sequel Arya 2. The movie could entertain a section of the audience but failed to attract largely. The songs are still watched and listened to this date, but the movie failed to become as big as the first part did.

Shankar Dada MBBS is the official remake of Sanjay Dutt’s Munnabhai MBBS, which was a blockbuster then. Chiranjeevi’s Shankar Dada turned out to become a big blockbuster directed by Jayant Paranji. Later Prabhudeva came aboard to direct the sequel Shankar Dada Zindabad, again the remake of Lage Raho Munnabhai. The movie ended up as a debacle.

Prema Katha Chitram was a surprise hit. Director Maruthi changed his filmmaking style with his horror comedy and it went on to become one of the big hits in the year. It was a big break for Sudheer Babu, Praveen, and Sapthagiri. Later a director HariKishan came up with the idea of a sequel for the film with the same producer. The movie was made as Prema Katha Chitram 2 with Sumanth Ashwin and Nandita Swetha. Though captioned as ‘back to fear’, the movie managed to bore the audience to death.
