As we all know, the Indian film industry has been badly hit due to covid 19. It is also well-versed that small theatres have been completely shut but factually, even the shares of the two top multiplex operators in India (INOX and PVR) fell sharply by up to 19 per cent. When the lockdown was first extended, PVR tumbled 18.85 per cent to its 52-week low of ₹1,045.85 and INOX Leisure plunged 14.77 per cent to hit its day’s low of ₹270.
After huge losses, the cinema halls have now commenced with the central government’s recent order, allowing 100% occupancy. The latest guidelines released by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said: “Seating arrangement inside the auditorium of the cinemas/theatres/multiplexes is to be allowed up to 100% seating capacity.” Earlier, only 50 per cent seating strength was allowed to operate.
Amid the happiness on reopening of theatres, a new French socially distanced theatre concept has been doing rounds on the internet, which of course multiplies the excitement among cine-goers. The Oma Cinema vertical concept would soon be implemented first in Paris and India is considering this safest yet economical idea as well.
With a comfortable seating arrangement and individual balcony, the “platform” layout offers projector positioning centrally among special seating “pods”. The Co-founder of Oma, Nicolas Chican, stated: “There are already luxurious multiplexes in the country but also India is a key market for Oma, as it is a nation of movie lovers and one of the biggest cinema markets in the world”.Additionally, the co-founder also clarified that this concept is suitable not only for multiplexes but also for single-screen theatres. The whole concept with staggered platforms will avoid overcrowding by letting the audience into the balconies at ease. There will be customisable platforms, besides opting for different sizes and levels. Nevertheless, this fascinating concept certainly brings a new dimension to entertainment.
