Nineteen-year-old Papisetti Tejaswini, pursuing ECE (2nd year) in Queen Engineering College, ended her life after finding it difficult to pay her college fee at Godugupalem in Ongole on Friday night. She hanged herself to death in her house.
Her father Nageswara Rao is a dailywage labourer and he could not pay the amount to the college after the fee reimbursement scheme was stalled. On Friday night, Nageswara Rao told his daughter that he had paid Rs 35,000 and that he cannot pay the remaining. Frustrated over the financial troubles, Tejaswini took the extreme step.
Learning about the incident, leaders of various student unions stormed the college and staged a demonstration. They demanded that the college should be scrapped of its autonomous status and also demanded that justice should be done to the victim’s family.
The student union leaders said that stopping the implementation of fee reimbursement scheme had impacted the lives of many poor students.
Meanwhile, TDP supremo and former chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said that the death of B.Tech student Tejaswini by suicide pained him. He said that it was extremely unfortunate to know that she took the extreme after finding it difficult to pay the college fee due to financial trouble.
What is the government doing when the parents could not afford her education, he asked and wondered what happened to the teaching fee scheme in Andhra Pradesh. He lamented that youth were ending their lives in a desperate situation. He demanded that the YCP government resolve students’ problem and also extend financial aid to Tejaswini’s family.
