Saranga Dariya song from Love Story has been trending ever since it was launched. The song is rocking the chartbusters, thanks to the peppy folk number and the tune in addition to Sai Pallavi’s dance moves and Sekhar Kammula’s beautiful picturisation. While the lyrics of the song were credited as Suddala Ashok Teja, here is the twist. A controversy has surrounded the song as it is alleged to be copied.
Komali, a folk singer from Warangal district’s Kesamudram’s mandal and Intikannu village, is said to have sourced the Saranga Dariya song first. Komali had originally sourced the song from her grandmother and she had first sang the song during the TV show Rela Re Rela! that has Suddala Ashok Teja as the chief judge.
Komali said she wasn’t given due credit for the song in the film though her song was used. She said that she came to know about using the song only after the song’s promo came out. She said that director Sekhar Kammula was also aware that she had sourced the song, but she added that she wasn’t given due credit. Komali said she had asked Sekhar Kammula and Suddala Ashok Teja to give her the opportunity to sing the song but in vain. She said they had told her that it is already late and the song is already completed.
Writer Suddala Ashok Teja differs with Komali. Admitting that Komali had sung the song at the Rela Re Rela program, he says that the folk song has been in circulation from decades. He says the tune has been retained just like any other folk tune or mass tune like Mokkajonna Thotalo. He says he has changed the lyrics of the song’s Charanam while retaining few lines of the original song in the Pallavi. That is the story behind Saranga Dariya from Love Story.
