In a tragic update, wrestler Ritika Phogat, maternal sister of Dangal sisters and champion wrestlers Geeta and Babita Phogat, reportedly ended her life by suicide. Apparently, Ritika hanged herself on Wednesday night after losing a wrestling bout by just 1 point. She was just 17.
Ritika participated in the state-level wrestling competition at Lohagarh Stadium in Bharatpur. The finals was held on March 14th and Ritika, who lost by just a single point, could not bear the defeat and hanged herself. Like all the four Phogat sisters and their cousins, Ritika too was coached by Mahavir Singh Phogat.
Ritika’s tragic demise has shaken the Indian sporting world. Many sports fans are taking to social media to express their condolences and shock over the young talent’s sudden demise. On the other hand, pressure is being mounted on the sports ministry to make psychological counseling a must for all athletes in Indian sports.
Meanwhile, Ritika’s cousin sister, Ritu Phogat, took to Twitter and posted Ritika’s photograph and penned an emotional tweet. “Rest in Peace choti behen Ritika. I still can’t believe what just happened with you Will miss you forever. Om Shanti,” Ritu wrote.
