Is This Legendary Director Running Out Of New Ideas?

Published by

Shankar is one of the visionary directors of Indian Cinema. He made many blockbuster films like Gentleman, Premikudu, Oke Okkadu, Aparichithudu, and Robo in the past. However, none of his films are working after Robo. Films like Snehithudu, I, and Robot 2 have tanked at the box office. Of late, Shankar is obsessed with sequels and remakes of his own films. Is this an indication of him running out of new ideas or lacking the support of a good writing team?

Shankar had a long relationship with writer Sujatha. The latter wrote the scripts of almost all of Shankar’s films. After his demise, the void was clearly seen in Shankar’s filmography. After Sujatha’s demise, Shankar remade 3 idiots as Snehithudu. It was a flop at the box office. Then, he tried something different with ‘I’ but it became a disaster. After that huge failure, Shankar came up with the idea of sequels. Immediately, he made a sequel for Robo, called 2.0. It got good openings but remained a financial failure.

In 2019, Shankar started Indian 2 with Kamal Haasan. The film is getting delayed for multiple reasons. We don’t know when it will go back on the floors. Recently, Shankar announced a film with Ram Charan. According to the sources, this film is a spin-off of Oke Okkadu. Apparently, Charan will play the role of an IAS officer who fights against the Chief Minister. It seems that the heroine of this film will play the role of a journalist.

Just a couple of days ago, Shankar announced a new film with Ranveer Singh. It is an adaptation of Aparichithudu. The makers claimed that the film will have a pan-India release. On the whole, Shankar is working only on the ideas of his old films but is not coming up with any new stories. Some inside circles argue that the legendary director lost his steam and it is clearly visible after the failure of Robo.
